The chips that will lie at the heart of 2017’s new iPhone models are ready to go into production. For all the new technology expected, it looks like Apple isn’t looking for a major increase in the annual volume of iPhone sales.
This would indicate an initial production run of new iPhones that will be larger than that of 2016’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. This makes sense, given that the iPhone 7 family, even though Apple increased the cardinal model number, was an iterative update to the previous year’s iPhone 6S family. While the iPhone 7S models are expected to maintain that tradition, the iPhone 8 is going to be the new flagship with a number of new features.
These include a larger 5.8 inch screen using OLED technology for a brighter and more vivid display, the reduction of the top and bottom bezels, and the removal of the physical home key. No doubt Apple is expecting these changes to energize the iPhone market and contribute to larger sales of the more expensive unit, but the volume of chips ordered suggest that Tim Cook and his team are selling into a market where the amount of fresh devices needed each year has stabilised.
